The pomelo is native to southeastern Asia and all of Malaysia; grows wild on river banks in the Fiji and Friendly Islands. It may have been introduced into China around 100 B.C. It is much cultivated in southern China (Guangdong, Guangxi, and Fujian Provinces) and especially in southern Thailand on the banks to the Tha Chine River; also in Taiwan and southernmost Japan, southern India, Malaya, Indonesia, New Guinea and Tahiti.

Main soil: gray clay, gray-yellow clay, and sand clay of paddy field; gray-red soil, red soil, crimson soil of hilly country. Meanwhile, the soil distinguished sandiness soil, powder sandiness soil, and clay loam by quality of a material.

Their characteristic are:
Sandiness soil: good aerate capability, feebleness ability of keep moisture and fertility, low content of organic substance(<1%), lean to acidity(pH 4.5 to 5.5), and soil leanness.

Powder sandiness soil: good aerate capability, generic ability of keep moisture and fertility, lean to low content of organic substance(1.0%-1.5%),
lean to acidity(pH 4.5 to 5.5), ecumenical fecundity.

Clay loam: generic aerate capability, preferable ability of keep moisture and fertility, middling content of organic substance(1.5%-2.5%), soil acidity(pH 4.0 to 5.5), and rich soil.
